Jon,

People have different learning styles. If you're just getting started it's 
like learning a new language. Some people read Tin Tin or Winnie il Pu; 
some prefer to go to the cafe or the tavern. Some people get the repair 
manual written in German or Italian and try to do something simple like 
change a headlight or the oil.

If it would help I'd be happy to get on a video call sometime in the next 
week and spend an hour talking about / looking at stuff. (Others are 
welcome!)
