Postel had it right when the Internet was a research project. However, as a global telecommunications infrastructure, this philosophy is proving quite problematic.
Unfortunately, pragmatically speaking, software writers (if they wish their software to be used) tend to have to bend to the bogosities and obscenities inflicted upon them by the "big guys" resulting in code getting ever more complicated. So it goes.
