It should show a tray icon in the tray bar.

Ok, Unity!

Can you install libappindicator-dev  ?
Then make clean (or delete sourcedir and reextract sourcedir)
Then re-run configure and make and make-install

I saw Unity GUI working, but you need to have libappindicator-dev
installed for it to work (and autodetect).
